(Production is in Russian)

Steps Theatre’s Producing Director Slava Stepnov wrote and directed an original play based on Chekhov’s short story The Lady with the Pet Dog. The plot of the story is really simple: a holiday romance, an adulterous love affair.
Steps Theatre has chosen the famous story because underneath its melodramatic fable it saw the peculiar and paradoxical phenomenon of unhappy happiness. Each of us often leads a double life, and at times it turns us into absurd and tragic figures. As Chekhov himself put it, “Everything is wonderful in this world, everything except for our thoughts and deeds when we forget about the loftier goals of existence…”
The production of Unhappy Happiness represents a daring shift of style, space and time. What do flying cardboard boxes, southern sea beaches, wintry Moscow of the late 19th century, Soviet lyrical songs of the 1950s and 60s, and New York City East Village have in common? See the play and find out.
STEPS Theatre was founded in 1997. Beginning with its very first production – Chekhov’s “Seagull”, the company has been working with actors of different nationalities and theatre schools, producing plays in English, Russian and Spanish. Company’s credits include plays by Luigi Pirandello, George Gordon Byron, Edward Albee, Alexander Vampilov, Julio Cortázar, Alexander Pushkin and others. As Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said in his support letter, “STEPS’ art plays a pivotal role in strengthening our City’s spirit and our quality of life, and I commend their commitment to performance art.” STEPS Theatre has performed before audiences in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and New Zealand. With its production of “Unhappy Happiness”, the theatre has been invited to participate in the international theater festival “In the Birthplace of Anton Chekhov”, (Russia).
